The Winthrop McNair Scholars Program prepares eligible undergraduates to be successful in research doctorate programs. If you are a SC undergraduate interested in earning a doctorate or other graduate degree, please explore whether you are eligible for Winthrop's TRiO McNair Program. Completing this Qualtrics survey is an important early step in exploring McNair because it is the first part of the application. Program staff will review completed surveys to determine each applicant's potential eligibility, then email applicants after reviewing the survey responses. Many of the questions in this survey are items required by the U.S. Department of Education in the annual performance report of served participant outcomes. To complete this survey, you will need to include parent/guardian education and family taxable income from last year.

"Students who qualify for McNair must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at an eligible institution. In all projects, at least two-thirds of the participants must be low-income, first-generation college students. [In fall 2024, we filled all slots for students from groups that are underrepresented in graduate education.] See https://www2.ed.gov/programs/triomcnair/eligibility.html and https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/incomelevels.html for federal eligibility information. The pages and links at www.winthrop.edu/mcnair provide information about program services, student successes, and applicant eligibility. You can ask questions about the program or application by calling the McNair office at 803.323.2125 or emailing mcnair@winthrop.edu.

The Winthrop McNair Advisory Board accepts applications between Labor Day and May graduation. However, the deadline to ensure application consideration for 2024-25 was February 16. Only complete applications will be considered by the Advisory Board. To be considered complete, applications must include this online survey, the other application materials, and two McNair recommendation forms, all of which are listed at www.winthrop.edu/mcnair/application.aspx.

All applicants who are being considered for selection will be invited to interview in-person. Interviews are a mandatory step in the selection process and interviews. Interviewer feedback will be added to the application package and considered by the Advisory Board. Decision letters will be mailed by ASAP to all interviewed applicants with complete applications.

Your application CANNOT be considered if you do not answer all questions in this survey, this includes your/your family's taxable income for the most recent tax year. Regardless of your circumstances, if the Financial Aid Office considers you DEPENDENT, you must report your family's taxable income (see IRS form 1040).
